Advertising Your Rental on Rightmove & Zoopla

No doubt about it, the best place to advertise property for rent in the UK is in the property portals Rightmove and Zoopla. Both command the market share of properties and, as a result, millions of visitors every day. 

The downside for private landlords is that only letting agents are allowed to advertise properties on them. So, how do you, a mere single landlord, get on to them too? Well, what you don’t do is bribe a letting agent to include you in their listing. What’s the point of that? Another reason only letting agents – who typically advertise 50 properties a month each – can upload adverts for properties to rent or sell is because the portals only want property professionals to deal with customer enquiries (and which are received directly by the letting agent). 

They also want to scale down their operation. By using only letting agents they are restricting the number of people they have to deal with. It’s the letting agent who handles the seller, buyer or landlord. What this means is that the executives at Rightmove and Zoopla can then get on with what they do best – keeping their huge online portals running smoothly, despite millions of site visitors every day. It also means they have lower running costs since they don’t have to hire additional staff to deal with customer enquiries themselves. 

Are Rightmove and Zoopla the only Way to Advertise My Property Online?

The two big portals aren’t the only sites advertising properties out there. But they are the biggest and best – as well as the sites just about every house or apartment hunter goes on to first. Rightmove, for instance, say they receive 125 million views on a monthly basis. Zoopla receives around 50 million views over the same period. 

Other Ways to Find Tenants

Of course, word-of-mouth advertising to find tenants still works for many landlords. So too does the cards in a newsagent’s window. Some landlords contact local hospitals or colleges and ask to be advertised on their intranets. 

Facebook, Gumtree and local forums can also come up trumps for many landlords. And, as the old adage goes, “if it ain’t broke….”
