If you’re moving to London and thinking of buying your first property, where in the city should you start looking? The capital has so many boroughs to choose from it can make your house hunting feel simply overwhelming, agree online property agents.
Price is a consideration, of course, so you may want to avoid the more expensive areas, such as Knightsbridge, Mayfair and other Inner-City areas. Chelsea too can be expensive, as can Notting Hill. If you’re still keen on living centrally though, Bermondsey and Canary Wharf and within walking distance – and affordable for first time buyers.
So, once you have worked out your budget and settled on some ‘possible’ locations, it’s time to work out whether you want to go north, south, east or west. Or indeed, north west, south east etc. Hopefully, this guide and your online property agent will help with your choice:

Regarded as more affordable than other areas of the capital, you will find trendy regenerated areas here, such as Hackney, Shoreditch and Tower Hamlets.
You’ll find plenty of hipsters hanging out in cafes and workspaces in East London. There’s also a lot of graffiti and some great street markets to get lost in. The downside is that the tube doesn’t cover a lot of the area. Having said that it’s possible to get the over-ground, buses or simply walk into the city.
There’s plenty of green spaces in south London – and which is why it’s popular with families, in particular. The south side of the city, more than any other, has a village-like feel (probably because of all that green space). Like East London there aren’t particularly great rail links, but again the bus service steps up.
Some of the most popular areas in South West London include Battersea, Clapham, Tooting, Balham and Brixton, say online property agents here at Property Loop. In South East London, you’re looking at Peckham, Camberwell, Lewisham and Dulwich.
The best transport (tube) links are in North London – probably because it covers more of Inner London and the City than the other locations. The over-ground trains are good too and there is access to the Docklands Light Rail. In other words, you’re literally going places (if you want to) in North London.
This part of London, like the southern boroughs, is also good for green spaces – Hampstead Health anyone? Colourful Camden Market is here, so too is famous Highgate Cemetery, Regents Park and London Zoo.
Popular areas here include Camden Town, Finsbury Park, Stoke Newington and Angel.
In West London you will find Chelsea, Notting Hill, Kensington, Chiswick and other well-to-do boroughs. It is also close enough to the Thames to make riverside dining and café going a common occurrence.
It’s in West London that you’ll find the famous department store Claridge’s, as well as Harrods and Bond Street itself. Heathrow Airport too actually has a West London address, as is Wembley Stadium.
Other popular areas of West London – which is considered the capital’s ‘leafiest’ area, include Putney, Fulham and Shepherd’s Bush. Greenery comes in the form of Hyde Park.
