Millwall Area Guide

Table of contents

Millwall has convenient transportation links, including several restaurants, stores, and pubs near the riverbank, and also features the nearby Mudchute country park. You’ll also find the odd Victorian terrace home housing a family. Even further development is planned, including more homes and the Crossrail Line.

History of Millwall

In the 1800s, Millwall was London’s hub for shipbuilding. And, in reality, the ill-fated SS Great Eastern was constructed on the site of the former mediaeval watermills, and both built and launched from the SS Great Eastern.

Although ships could no longer be launched in the narrow bends of the River Thames beginning in the 1880s, heavy and larger ships were replaced by engineering, chemical, and food processing industries by the 1890s.

Dating to the early 20th century, these industries and the ports have seen better days. But by the 1970s, as the country was hit by an economic crisis, most of the businesses in the Isle of Dogs had closed down. Some enterprises had become too huge for their Victorian locations, and so they had outgrown those spaces. These industries thus merged into larger corporations, while others were forced to find larger, more contemporary locations outside of London.

Even though it has just been 30 years since reconstruction started, the area around Millwall has truly shown remarkable progress. Isle of Dogs ancient factories have been replaced by Canary Wharf skyscrapers, and the district is now home to Europe’s second largest financial district (behind the City of London). Over the years, Millwall has become an almost entirely residential district, with modern high-rise apartment towers costing an average of over a million pounds alone.

Getting Around

Millwall is a district in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets on the western and southern side of the Isle of Dogs, in east London, England. It is southeast of Canary Wharf and Limehouse, northwest of Greenwich and Deptford, west of Rotherhithe, and it has a lengthy shoreline on the River Thames that is connected to the Thames Estuary.

In Canary Wharf, you will find both the Jubilee Line and the DLR, in Zone 2. South Quay and Mudchute, as well as Canary Wharf, are served by the Jubilee line and the Docklands Light Railway (DLR).

Poplar, West India Quay, Westferry, and South Quay are also on the disabled list. The Crossrail line will arrive in 2018. There are many local buses serving the region, including the Night Buses. For a change of pace, take the river bus to Canary Wharf. London City Airport is just around the corner.

All the routes that travel through the area (i.e. 135, 277, D7, D8, N550) all operate within it.

For London River Services, the closest pier is Masthouse Terrace Pier.

The northern section of the Westferry Road is connected to the National Road Network by the A1206.

North of the River Thames on the Thames Path, as well as on the National Cycle Network, are the National Cycle Route 1 for cyclists and the National Trail Thames Path for walkers.

In this region, most of the housing is in the form of flats, rather than single-family homes. Millwall is a largely residential suburb located on the Isle of Dogs. It was previously utilised to house workers who were employed at the abandoned shipyard, which is why the residences in the area are more modest and utilitarian. Though many of the residences you’ll see here can use a little remodelling, the majority of them are apartment units that will suit your needs.

The next region of town where new apartment complexes will be built is in the area, so keep your eyes peeled.

Due to the robust rental market, and the large amount of demand from commuters coming in and going out each day, the region possesses a transient vibe.

Attractions and Entertainments

Located in front of the former Greenwich Hospital, the Cutty Sark, National Maritime Museum, and Greenwich Park, the historic Island Gardens were opened on 3 August 1895 by local politician Will Crooks.

Ferry Street’s public house has been around since the 15th century (1485-1603). This building dates from 1822, and it was a bar for ferry passengers travelling between Greenwich and the foot tunnel for boats to and from Greenwich until 1902, when the foot tunnel was opened.

Built in 1835, the Ship Inn is supposed to be the result of two houses merging into a public house. Throughout its existence, it has been a tavern, and near Burrells Wharf, where Isambard Kingdom Brunel is thought to have occasionally visited. The store is locally owned and operated by an individual business.

Barkantine Estate began construction in March 1965 and was completed in 1968, when the first house block was constructed. The promenade was called The Quarterdeck, and the tavern was called the Tooke Arms, which was also relocated and rebuilt simultaneously.

The Space is set within a former Presbyterian church established in 1859 and designed by Thomas Knightley, which was built on the Isle of Dogs to accommodate the Scottish Presbyterians who had relocated there to work in the shipyards.

The location you have in Millwall is perfect because it’s next to Canary Wharf and Tower Hamlets, both of which offer many activities, such as restaurants, bars, and cinemas.

Open Spaces

Due to Millwall’s lack of natural spaces, Mudchute Farm and the Thames Path are near at hand.

Sports and Fitness

The most notable aspect of Millwall is their football club, Millwall F.C. Known now as The Lions, the squad was once known as The Dockers, which is located in New Cross, just to the south of the Thames. Since founding Millwall Football Club four decades ago, the team has occupied four successive venues on the Isle of Dogs. As a result, they currently play in Bermondsey while using the Millwall moniker despite not having a single team meeting this location for more than a century.

The club was founded in 1995 as Millwall Rugby Club. Both teams participate in the Essex Merit Table Division 2 (Essex Division 1) and Division 5 (Merit Table Division 6) play in, having finished Division 6 last season. This is yet another move in the right direction, as they’ve added a women’s rugby team known as the Millwall Venus girls and a youth team for boys and girls in the eighth grade.

This dock formerly connected to the River Thames. It is located in the extreme west section of the dock where the waterway continues in a southwest direction. The cost of setting up the new stadium was approximately £1.2 million, which was financed by the London Docklands Development Corporation and the Sports Council.

Nightlife

There are a wide variety of restaurants, taverns, and bars located here, with many of them situated along the river and offering amazing views. Yet the neighbourhood has no nightclubs, but the East End is nearby, and transportation options are great.
